Cowboy Division is for ages 14-17.
Events include: barrels, poles, goat tying, stock sorting, breakaway calf roping and chute doggin'.
Event description and rules:
GOAT TYING - This is a timed event for the
wrangler and cowboy divisions, girls and boys.
- Time starts when the contestant crosses
the start line and stops when their hands are thrown up and the flag judge drops the flag.
- Contestants
will start at the alleyway and proceed to the goat where the flagman is, either on the right or left.
- Three legs must be tied and stay tied for 6 seconds. If the goat gets up, no time.
- Horses coming in contact with the goat or stake rope will result in a disqualification.
- There will be a 30 second time limit.
- The appropriate
sized goat will be used for either girls or boys.
POLE
BENDING
- The pole bending pattern is
for the Cowpoke, Wrangler and Cowboy divisions, girls and boys.
- The pole bending
pattern is to be run around 6 poles. Each pole is to be 21 feet apart and the first pole is to be 21 feet
from the starting line.
- The pattern may be run either to the right or left.
- Each pole knocked over shall carry a 5 second penalty.
- Broken
or incomplete patterns will result in a disqualification. A broken pattern consists of missing a pole or
passing a pole. You may not back up or turn around to correct your mistake. The pattern
must be run exactly as shown.
BARREL RACING
- The course must be measured exactly, the first barrel will be 20 yards from the start line,
there will be 30 yards between the first and second barrel, and 35 yards between the second and third barrel.
If the course is too large for the available space, then the pattern should be reduced until it fits the arena by 5
yards at a time. Remember to leave adequate space between barrels and obstacles. First
and second barrels should be at least 20 feet from the fence.
- The contestant will
run to barrel number 1, pass to the left of it, and complete an approximately 360 degree turn around it; then go to barrel
number 2, pass to the right of it and complete a slight more than a 360 degree turn around it; then go to barrel number 3,
pass to the right of it and do another approximately 360 degree turn around it; and then run to the finish line passing between
barrel number 1 and 2.
- This barrel course may also be run to the left.
- Each barrel knocked over shall carry a 5 second penalty.
- Broken or incomplete
pattern results in a disqualification. The pattern must be run exactly as shown. You
may NOT go to the wrong side of the barrel and back up to correct your mistake. You may not circle before
the barrel and continue on. Both of these examples will result in a disqualification.
STOCK SORTING
- This event is
for the wrangler andcowboy divisions, open to girls and boys
- This is a timed event
with a 2 minute time limit.
- Yearling heifers shall be calmed and bunched at the end
of the arena. The contestant shall ride into the herd and sort out 2 heifers, either one at a time or if
2 come out at the same time your time stops. If more than 2 come out at anytime, time stops but with
a 30 second penalty PER HEAD over the 2 head limit.
- The contestant shall not exceed a trot
in the herd, but can lope out the selected number once it is clear of the herd.
- Time starts when
the contestant rides across the start/stop line and ends when the final selected cattle crosses the start/stop
line after being ridden out of the herd or when time runs out. The fastest time wins.
BREAKAWAY
CALF ROPING 1. This is a cowboy level event ages 14 -1 7 open to girls and boys. 2.
A calf rope shall be used to catch the calf
after it is rode out of the herd. 3. The calves will be settled after each run. 4. There is a 2 minute time limit on this event. Any
catch is legal as long as the head goes thru the loop.
5. There is a 2 rope limit, either you can rebuild or you can use another
ready rope. 6.
Time starts when the rider crosses the start/stop
line going into the herd. 7. A brightly colored ribbon shall be tied onto the rope and saddle horn to designate when the rope detaches from
the saddle; stopping the time. 8. The rider cannot touch or assist the rope from coming off of the saddle in any manner
other than stopping their horse. If the rope is touched after the calf has been roped, it will be a disqualification.
CHUTE DOGGIN': 1. For the cowboy division only; ages 14-17, girls and boys 2. 30 second
time limit 3. Stock will be run into a chute into a left hand deliver. All stock will be turned out in the same direction. 4. The
score line will be clearly marked, parallel to the bucking chutes and 10 feet in front
of the chute. 5. If after calling for the
steer, the steer gets loose, the dogger may take no more than one
step to catch the steer. The wrestler must bring the steer to a stop or change its direction
and twist it down. 6. The steer is considered thrown down
only when it is lying flat on its side, or on its back with all four feet and head straight.
A hullahan (steer lying down with 2 legs one way and 2 legs under or the other way) will result
in a disqualification.
7. Only the contestant
is allowed in the chute with the steer. No tailing of steers from the chute
is allowed. 8. With steers loaded in chute,
dogger gets beside the steer, left hand on the left horn, right hand in front
of or behind the front shoulder. When dogger calls for steer the chute will
be opened. Dogger must keep right hand in front of or behind shoulder until the steer's
nose crosses the score line. If dogger moves into throwing position before steer's nose
crosses score line, there will be a 10 second penalty added to the time. If steer is
thrown before crossing the score line, the dogger will be disqualified..
GOAT TEAM ROPING: **This will be an open event
and will NOT count towards the all around. 1. This is an on foot event - not on horses. 2.
Open to a mixture of all ages, girls and boys. 3. Goat will be released out of a chute (just like team roping)
with a header and a heeler. 4. There is a 2 loop limit with a 30 second time limit. (for goats'
safety!) 5. Any head catch is legal as long as no legs are caught. 6. Five second penalty for
one hind leg.
